This page displays art that I completed in my Drawing and Painting class (so all are dated 2013).
carousel
This project was the first one I did in my one semester of drawing and painting. I wanted to do a charcoal really bad because I hadn't had much chance to work with the medium, so I played around on Google images until I found a really cool picture of a black and white carousel. I knew it would be a lot of work and a lot of small detailing, but I managed to convince myself to do it.
Drawing it out first took longer than the charcoal part of it, I think. I didn't use gridlines like I did on my scribble drawing from Creative Art, but I did split the paper into four sections so it would be easier for me to get the proportions right.
When I started the charcoal part I was surprised by how messy it was! I was constantly erasing smudges off my paper (and washing them off myself!). I spent most of my time on the scroll like designs on the outer face of the carousel.
I really liked the way this project turned out, and if I had to pick a favorite of everything I did this semester, this would be it.

s a i l
This project took me a great while, also, despite its size (sketchbook paper). I got my inspiration from a friend's tattoo idea, and I decided I wanted to see how sharpie and watercolor would look. So I sketched out the anchor, then the roses, the rope, and the banner. Then I went over it with sharpie, and added value. After I finally finished that, I started the watercoloring. It was interesting to experiment with color and technique but I got the hang of it pretty fast.
I didn't intend for this to be a project, I mainly worked on it as a sketch, but I thought it was good enough to display at my end of the year gallery. Unfortunately, when I went to pick up my art at the end of the week, it was missing. Even the four pins that held it up were gone, so I know it didn't just fall off the wall or anything. I haven't been able to track it down, but I'm hoping it turns up, because I worked really hard and put a lot of time and detail into it.
wide open
This was an unexpected project too. It started off as just a pencil sketch, and then instead of shading it I changed my mind and watercolored it. I was in too much of a rush though so the colors bled together a little. So in desperation I took a sharpie to the lines, which ruined it and made it look really bad.
I forgot about it for a while, but I pulled it back out and decided to clean up the sharpie lines with a super thin sharpie instead of a regular one. After I cleaned them up I got carried away with random detail : ) But I really like the way it turned out!
windstorm
Windstorm was a pretty fun project to do! Given it took me a while, I had fun drawing and painting it. First I sketched out the bodies and watercolored them, and then I added the manes and tails and tried my best to wisp them into the background. I played around with spots on their bodies, and making the manes and tails look even and fade nice I had to REALLY fuss over it . . .
Turned out pretty good though. I like the colors I used because they're not too dark or bright, and I like the positioning of each horse. The blue one is my favorite of the three.
break away
Sadly, I didn't find time to finish this project. I was really excited about it because I had been watching my peers work on big paintings in class while I was stuck doing really intricate work on my Carousel piece. So when I finally started this, I was so excited to start painting, but because I took it home I couldn't work on it during class time, and I couldn't ever find enough time outside of school. But I really like what I have so far: a horse breaking away from its carousel and jumping off into the night. The shoreline will be a silhouette against the last remnants of a sunset. Even though I couldn't finish this for the art gallery I hope to finish it really soon! I want to see how well I can pull it off!
bob and me
This project took me the longest out of all the projects I did this entire year and maybe my entire life. It was so exhausting, especially because I'm a perfectionist and it had to look just right before I could move on to the next square. I also started later than other people did because I refused to use any other photos than the ones of Bobby and I on my family's trip out west one summer. I really, really wanted to use those photos, but I couldn't get them right away. And THEN there's the whole perfectionist deal. This picture is technically for my other art class, but if I would've finished it in time, I would've put it in my art gallery!
I really, really like the way it turned out, and I plan on giving it to my brother as a graduation gift. And I don't think I am ever going to attempt another pencil drawing like this for a LONG time . . . haha
